3x3 History

The growth of 3x3 basketball globally now offers the opportunity for players to not only organize pick-up games in the park, but to play in officially sanctioned 3x3 tournaments across the country.

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) first introduced 3x3 basketball as a sanctioned sport at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games in Singapore. Since then, 3x3 has grown internationally to include World Championships at the U18 and open (adult) divisions. 2011 saw the first 3x3 U18 World Championships in Rimini, Italy. A year later, the FIBA 3x3 World Championships for the open divisions debuted in Athens. Countries including China, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Russia and Spain have all played host to U18 World Championships or World Championships.

What is 3×3 basketball?

The game is played on a half court and each team consists of 4 players, there is usually only one referee on each game. Each game is 10 minutes of play. The possession of the game is decided by a flip of a coin. 3×3 is played as a continuous game. Substitutions are only allowed when there is a dead ball. There is also no coach on court for a 3×3 game.

How to score in a 3×3 game?

Every 2point field goal is awarded 1 point, every 3point field goal is awarded 2 points and each successful foul shot is awarded 1 point.

How does this assist player development?

3×3 is very valuable for skill development. It allows all players to get more touches and makes players play with both sides of their body – forcing players to work on their weak hands. 3×3 also assists players to develop good decision-making skills, leadership skills and improve their communication.
